HIGH RISK PERPETRATOR

Although there are other reasons that may motivate a person to shake an infant, crying is by far the number one reason. Persistent crying occurs at all levels of our society, and perpetrators of shaking crimes come from all class levels too. Historically, child abuse and neglect has been more common in families with significant social problems, i.e. low income and/or unemployed. Some perpetrators are loving parents, some are childcare workers, some are drug addicts and some are violent individuals.

A crying infant can affect anyone—though not everyone shakes a crying infant. Concentrating on a group of individuals who are more “at risk” misses the need for prevention efforts across a continuum. Typically, SBS prevention efforts tend to respond to highly-publicized shaking cases, such as those occurring in daycare facilities, where an au pair is employed or with stay-at-home dads. Instead, attention should be given to the syndrome itself, its causes and how to prevent it from happening at all.
